Dr. David Petti decided to give children an incentive for eating candy in moderation this Halloween season by doing a candy buy-back event after Halloween. He offered to pay children $1 for every pound of candy they bring to his office.

“Halloween is a fun event for both the young and old,” Petti said. But he also plans to use the event to talk with children about getting regular checkups and what to do to ensure good dental hygiene.

All the candy collected by Dr. Petti was donated to the US troops serving overseas.

David Petti of Plum will be giving free emergency dental treatments for both children and adults between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Feb. 24 in his office at 777 Pine Valley Drive.

In an announcement, Dr. Petti said, “Anyone with a dental emergency or in need of a cleaning, who could not afford it, will be provided with emergency dental treatment at NO COST on a first-come, first-served basis.”

He added that his office plans additional free treatment days throughout the year to help people who cannot afford dental care.

Dentist Pittsburgh PA Dr David Petti Another year of trick-or-treating has left many kids with not only stomachaches, but backaches from carting around all their candy. Local dentist’s offices, however, found a way for families this year to donate their extra Halloween candy to armed force troops overseas and avoid potential toothaches, too. Many dentist offices in the area supported the Candy Buy-Backs, including David Petti’s office in Plum Borough.

Petti said the candy is sent along with a letter, and sometimes the troops respond.

“It’s a pleaser for the kids. The kids may maybe even give some information about secret hiding places in military operations,” Petti said. “I didn’t realize that it was going to go that far.”

This is the first year that Petti’s office has organized a buy-back, and they are surprised at how much attention it has received.

The only thing Petti said he is worried about is whether he will have enough storage room for the candy in his offices. He said he might have to take some home if they get a lot, but they will try to send it overseas as soon as possible prior to the collection. The office, as of Wednesday, received over 60 pounds of donations.

Getting this amount of candy overseas can also be a lengthy process, he said.

Sherry Wilson, receptionist from the office of Gottfried and Durachko Dentistry, who also does buy-backs, said she knows the candy will at least make it there by Christmas. Their office received more than 100 pounds of candy during their buy-back this year, she said.

Petti is planning on possibly sending the candy overseas through the Operation Gratitude program, which operates through the California Army National Guard to send Halloween candy to troops every year. Operation Gratitude collected and shipped 60 tons of candy last year.

“It’s a win-win situation,” Wilson said. “It’s wonderful for the troops; they really appreciate it. It also helps the kids because it’s good for dental health.

Though Snickers candy bars and Skittles taste good, too many sugary treats can hurt a child’s teeth and lead to tooth decay.

Petti is doing a candy buy-back event after Halloween. He is looking to pay children for their Halloween candy. He will give youngsters $1 for every pound of candy they bring to his office until Nov. 5.

“It’s the initial, inaugural drop-off,” Petti said. “We were looking for something fun for the kids, and it’s good for the community and good for kids’ health.”

Young people 18 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult to receive money for their candy.

“Halloween is a fun event for both the young and old,” Petti said. “This program definitely rewards the ‘good child’ who would not eat the candy anyway by letting him or her turn trick-or-treating into a profitable and fun event.”

Petti said youngsters need not be patients of his office to participate in the event.

The dentist also plans to use the event to talk with children about getting regular checkups and what to do to ensure good dental hygiene.

Petti has a plan for the candy he collects.

“I am going to take the candy and eat it all,” Petti joked.

He does hope to donate the candy to troops overseas.

“It’s a good cause,” Petti said.

Petti hopes to fill fewer cavities as a result of the buy-back.

“I want to make kids aware that if sugary treats lay on your teeth, it’s not good for them,” Petti said.
